Artists

Rod Moss’s exhibition DRAWN is a collection of earlier and recent graphite works on Stonehenge paper. After graduating from a Masters of Art at Monash University, Rod moved to Alice Springs in 1985 where he developed an enduring relationship with the Aboriginal families of Whitegate camp on the town’s eastern fringe. His drawings and paintings are full of arresting imagery (both as haunting landscapes or portraits of the human condition) - offering viewers a closer look into Aboriginal daily life in the desert. Often perplexing but always engaging, Rod’s graphic works can appear both mundane and sardonic. Suggestive poses by the Aboriginal subjects simultaneously challenge both our knowledge and ignorance of Indigenous life, with Rod often wryly quoting famous masterworks from European painting history including those of Rembrandt and Piero della Francesca.

You can read about Rod's stories in his books, The Hard Light of Day (2011) and One Thousand Cuts (2013).

DRAWN includes 13 graphite works created between 1994 and 2013.
