This is a great educational opportunity and families are welcome.
Glen Mackie's (Kei Kalak's) latest exhibition at FireWorks Gallery, is a celebration of his key works from 2009 – 2014 and retell the legendary stories inherited from older family members.
The featured work in this exhibition, The Coming of Sigai, tells the legendary story of four brothers (bala) Malo, Sigai, Kulka and Siu who came to the Torres Strait many years ago. These brothers went on to form their own tribes, which became the foundation of Torres Strait Islander culture today. Sigai was renowned for his great strength and wit, teaching the art of fighting. His totem is the hammerhead shark and his wife Maiu's totem is the crocodile. Both are represented in this print, which depicts Sigai with his three brothers.
