In this painting, Yinggarda Wadjarri artist Sonya Edney paints heavy rain over her country in the Gascoyne region of Western Australia. With her masterful use of a variation of fine dotting one can almost hear the rain falling from the sky, spattering onto the river water and running across the land. In Spring, rains fill the creeks and cause a proliferation of different coloured wildflowers to spread across the red earth.

When the rain has been heavy the Gascoyne River fills, sometimes flooding its banks and the white trunks of the Ghost gums are reflected in the water. Sonya’s use of fine dotting and subdued colours in this evocative work capture the mood of the rainstorm moving over country and the shimmering reflective light of the rain clouds on the river’s surface.
