FireWorks
Gallery, in conjunction with Urban Art Projects (Brisbane), Wik
and Kugu Arts and Craft Centre (Aurukun); and Maningrida Arts and
Culture (North Central Arnhem Land) presents our forthcoming exhibition
Sculpture + Works on Paper.
This
eclectic group exhibition features a variety of works by local and
visiting artists utilising cast metals, free-form sculpture, fiberglass,
ochre painted carvings, fibre works, large drawings, limited edition
prints; photography and installation work. Artists include: Rod
Moss, Dorothy Napangardi, David Paulson, Vincent Serico, Matthew
Johnson, Lin Onus, Walala Tjapaltjarri, Billy Missi, Ian Waldron,
Michael Eather, Ben Somerville, Jenny Fraser, Archie Moore and Dr.
Michael Nelson Jagamara. Michael Nelson will travel to Brisbane
from Papunya to open this exhibition on October 28.
Urban
Art Projects is a professional Brisbane based design consultancy
works to exist in site - specific architectural and landscape environments.
They also work directly with artists in urban and remote areas to
professionally transform traditional forms and images into superb
limited edition cast bronze and aluminium works. Twelve new works
will be presented in this exhibition including floor and table sculptural
pieces by Lena Yarinkura, Koolpinyah Barnes, Owen Yalandja and others.
Wik
and Kugu Arts and Craft Centre located in Aurukun Far North Queensland
are best known for the unique sculptural depictions of totemic beings
and creation ancestors belonging to the Sara, Winchanam, Apalech,
Putch and Wanam clans. The energetic community art centre is a central
plank for a new wave of creative development emerging from Cape
York.
Maningrida
Arts and Culture is one of Australia’s largest Aboriginal
artist’s co-operatives. Its primary focus is to support and
promote traditional and contemporary art of high quality maintaining
the cultural integrity of the Aboriginal people of the Maningrida
region. The Centre is renowned for its excellence demonstrated in
the playful, mischievous mimih spirits and delicately hand-woven
fish traps selected for this exhibition.
Local
sculptor Ben Somerville presents a menagerie of animals from found
or crafted corrugated iron, David Paulson has installed a wall of
figurative works on paper; Ian Waldron presents an dynamic installation
of Bloodwood Totem painted poles; whilst Alice Springs artist Rod
Moss exhibits large, panoramic graphite works on paper depicting
poetic landscapes often with Aboriginal subjects.
Sculpture
+ Works on Paper is a prelude to a new series of sculpture
based shows scheduled over the next two years where FireWorks Gallery
will be showcasing our involvement in commissioned sculptures and
collaborative projects between Indigenous and non Indigenous artists
including: Walala Tjapaltjarri; Laurie Nilsen; Michael Nelson Jagamara,
Imants Tillers and Campfire Group artists.
Sculpture
+ Works on Paper is our largest exhibition of the
year with over 100 works on display! The show is geared for a wide
audience with small and large scale works - prices beginning at
$330 up to $20,000
