NEWflames
artist in residency pilot program began in 2002, as a new initiative
of Campfire Group and Fire-Works Gallery. This innovative program
is offered to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander emerging and
post-emerging artists. Up to six residency places are offered
each year and are drawn from artists Australia wide.
The
program is grounded in the notion of self-determination. Artists
are encouraged to experiment with new ways of thinking about their
practice. This approach allows the artist a freedom of expression,
flexibility in structure and an opportunity for community involvement
that is both unique and important.
Annie
Gamble Myer is a Patron and Deputy Chair of the Board of Trustees
at the Queensland Art Gallery, and as a long standing supporter
of Indigenous artists, has sponsored the NEWflames residency program
in partnership with Fire-Works Gallery.
While
visual arts are the main focus of this residency program, other
cultural forms of expression are encouraged and incorporated to
allow the inter-connectedness of Indigenous culture to operate
in the urban studio environment. The artist in residency program
is a unique opportunity for emerging and post emerging artists
to work with new materials, develop professional skills, receive
technical instruction, improve industry knowledge, gain exhibition
experience and perhaps collaborate with Indigenous and non-Indigenous
artists.

Support
NEWflames: NEWflames
is a “grassroots” organisation.
In the last 12 months our Management Committee have dedicated
not only their time and expertise but also their financial resources.
Through this commitment we hope to encourage and include others
in supporting our studio programs over the next three years. Every
person’s financial contribution, great or small, will contribute
to the successful future of NEWflames Inc.
“It
would seem that an artist lives in pursuit of creative expression
and meaning, seeking to interpret the human condition in all it’s
colour, bringing us closer to our own soul. Often, however, the
journey is one of little glory and even less bread.”
(Annie Gamble Myer)
There
is great satisfaction in giving to a good cause.
As an accountant, I can tell you that there is greater satisfaction
in giving to a good cause and getting a Tax Deduction for it.
