Born:
c1960 Western Desert NT
Language: Pintupi
Country: Wilkinkarra
Region: Kintore NT
Walala lived nomadically until 1984, when he settled with his
family at Kiwirrkurra, WA. He began his artistic career in 1991
in the classic Pintupi dot and circle style, and – like
many in the community – he chose to depict men’s
Tingari designs. Walala’s Tingari sculptures, created
in association with Campfire Group Artists in Brisbane (a collaboration
that began in 1999), depict forms drawn from men’s ceremonial
ground painting designs. The sculpture series are mapped from
Walala’s drawings which have been translated – via
scans and laser-cutting technologies – into (limited edition)
welded steel and timber forms. His works are held in private,
corporate and public collections nationally and internationally.
