FireWorks Gallery presents two concurrent exhibitions from Australian women artists -
Yvonne Mills-Stanley: Fragile Fields alongside Selected Works from Kintore & Kiwirrkura.

Yvonne Mills-Stanley’s latest collection of 20 new paintings, Fragile Fields, journeys through magnificent grass fields, seemingly both real and imagined. This collection demonstrates what her award winning artworks have become renowned for.

For quite some time I have enjoyed painting grass and as I feel myself becoming closer to the earth the obsessive regard I have for the subject appears to reach out. I am concerned with the colour, structure and movement of grass, and the relationship between areas of where grass has once been and where grass is now travelling to. Yvonne Mills-Stanley

Yvonne first began exhibiting in Brisbane in 1981 and has maintained a consistently strong painting practice and exhibition involvement. Yvonne’s keen interest in representations of grass began in 2004 and has since developed into a distinctive stylistic aesthetic unique to the artist.

Michael Eather, Director FireWorks Gallery, describes Yvonne’s work as ”superbly crafted oil paintings, loaded with strong, simple metaphor. The austerity and boldness of this subject matter is balanced by a delicate depth and finish - enhanced, seemingly, with the very fragrance of the Australian landscape.”

Also on show will be a collection of vibrant complementary desert canvases by senior women Western Desert artists from Kintore, Northern Territory and Kiwirrkura, Western Australia. Artists included are, Bombatu Napangati, Eileen Napaltjarri, Josephine Nangala, Kawayi Nampitjinpa, Kim Napurrula, Nanyuma Napangati, Payu Napaltjarri & Yakari Napaltjarri.

The designs created by these senior women are directly inspired by their knowledge of traditional body and sand painting that take part during ceremony. Illustrating these motifs has required the removal of sacred symbols and the vigilant supervision of ancestral designs.

These works have been sourced and selected from Papunya Tula Artists, Alice Springs, whose aim is to promote individual artists, provide economic development for the communities to which they belong and assist in the maintenance of a rich cultural heritage.

Opening Night Friday 11th September 530 - 730pm, exhibitions continue until 10th October
