Born to acclaimed artist Minnie Pwerle and an Irish father, Barbara was taken from her birthplace of Utopia at age nine and sent to live in a foster home in accordance with assimilation policies of the time. She later returned to Utopia and reconnected with the stories, ceremonies and languages of her Country. Barbara’s practice reflects this reconnection, often depicting the Grass Seed dreaming of her country. Barbara has exhibited extensively throughout Australia, Europe and the US and her work is held in several major private and public collections, including the National Gallery of Victoria.
